A CHAT WITH WEEKEND HEROES
Weekend Heroes started their way as collaboration project between 2 electronic scene veterans Felix Nagorsky aka Timelock and Eli Baltsan aka DJ Zombi. They met first in 2009 with goal in their mind to create music which will be different but in same time speaking easily to wild audience, a perfectly balanced blend of Progressive House & Melodic Techno..
I’ve had a char with the great duo, and they shared their tips and tricks about DJ and Music Production as well as valuable insights ..
Enjoy!
1. YOU MET EACH OTHER IN 2009 AND YOU HAVE BEEN PRODUCING AND PERFORMING TOGETHER SINCE THEN. WHAT IS THE SECRET BEHIND A BONDING DUO THAT LASTS?
Respect, open mind and to contain that’s the keys. The most important is sharing ideas and roles in a project .. then it can last forever
2. I REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST LAUNCHED MY PROG LABEL PER-VURT RECORDS IN 2010, YOUR NAME ALWAYS SHOWED ON THE TOP CHARTS, HOW DO YOU DEFINE YOUR PROGRESSIVE HOUSE SOUND AND HOW DID IT EVOLVE AND WHERE IS IT NOW?
We are making more melodic style now but we are blending the styles and other makes the production process fun and fresh.
After all genres is just words and music is more than that.
3. YOU ARE ABOUT TO RELEASE 2 TRACKS ON AFTERLIFE “NO ONE’S COMING / TALK TO ME” IN COLLABORATION WITH ARGY, CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS COLLAB AND HOW DO YOU USUALLY WORK ON A TRACK WITH OTHERS?
This Collabs are special for us , in “No One’s Coming” we recorded the vocalist and started the main break of the track and Argy came with more Melodies and the arrangement, Same for “Talk To Me” we recorded the chopped vocals and started the process of making the tune together and the results are came up great
4. WHAT DAW DO YOU USE AND WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE STUDIO GEAR AT THE MOMENT?
Mainly we use Logic Pro but also we use a lot Ableton. Sometimes we start tracks on Ableton and move them to Logic and opposite. We use hardware synths like: Moog Sub 37, Dave Smith OB-6 and more, mixed with plugins.
5. YOUR TOP 5 “NOT TO DO” WHEN PRODUCING MUSIC?
- Don’t work too much on same idea in the same day…
- Don’t try to finish the track as fast as possible
- Don’t eat near your gear !
- Don’t try to copy other artists
- Don’t worry 😉
6. YOUR TOP 5 “NOT TO DO” WHEN DJ’ING OR PERFORMING LIVE?
- Don’t play only bangers
- Don’t get high before the gig
- Don’t think too much, let the music lead
- Don’t think the party is you, crowd is the party
- Don’t touch knobs without reason, it’s ok not to touch knobs all the time
7. WHAT ADVISES CAN YOU GIVE TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE JUST STARTED LEARNING HOW TO MAKE MUSIC? WHAT IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS?
Work Hard and smart … and remember , Hard work pays off
8. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF GHOST PRODUCTION THAT IS CURRENTLY INVADING THE WORLD OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC? DO YOU THINK THAT THE SONG-WRITER SHOULD DO ALL PRODUCTION PROCESSES?
Yeah, it was a part of music long time ago..
We have no problem with that .. but in the end.. everyone knows who makes the music and who doesn’t.
For now we don’t do ghost productions for no one…
And yes , if u are talented enough u can do all of that together by yourself.
9. HOW DO YOU START AN ORIGINAL TRACK? ANY SYSTEMATIC WORKFLOW? AND WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE MOST WHEN YOU ARE REMIXING OTHERS?
It depends if we have some vocal idea we start from vocals , usually also we start from kick and bass and then some melodies for the hook .
In a remix its most important to bring your special elements and unique sound to the other artist song…
10. WHAT ARE YOUR NEXT BIG PROJECTS FOR THIS YEAR?
We have few big collaborations with artists like: Ruback, Final Request, Mila Journee and more.. As well original tracks and EPs scheduled for some of our favorite labels.
